Dietary Protein

Tortoises kept in captivity are frequently reared on diets which are greater in protein than they would usually find the wild. This combined with the incorrect balance of calcium phosphorus ratio is a major direct cause of infant mortality. The growth rate of the tortoise is accelerated, often followed by over grown scutes; thickened keratin layers, over grown beaks and longer claws. If the balance of protein is abnormally high you will find excessive growth both generally and of the Keratin layers. This will increase the demand for calcium and affect the absorption ability. Also it will have direct effect upon the levels of waist to be processed via the renal system, thus resulting in renal dysfunction in later life.

  • A tortoise’s daily allowance should be 0.26g of usable protein per kg.
  • On average, lettuce contains 1g of protein per 100g.
  • On average, peas and beans contain 7g of protein per 100g.

Foods which are rich in protein include;

  • Tomatoes
  • Kale
  • Pease
  • Beans
  • Swiss Chard

To summarise – Try and provide as natural diet a possible. However if you are feeding your tortoise on supermarket produce on a daily basis consider using a vitamin supplement such as nutrobal.
